Easter Island | Update 08

Montag, 25. September 2017

Kerosin Flug

Monday, September 25, 2017

Since the airport of the Easter Island would open only at 11:00 local on Sundays, we would not have reached the Robinson Crusoe island in daylight. That means that a landing there is not possible because of missing landing lights. So we had to postpone our flight until Monday.

On Monday we were then picked up by Christian of Edmunds at about 0800 local, passed through the airport control and driven to the Malibu. There we loaded our luggage, checked whether water is in the Fueldrain and started the engine. We enter the flight plan and call tower: "Request clearance" which we received immediately. Then taxi with backtrack to Runway 28. There runup - something was different here already - we try the start - and cancel the try after half of the track - since we do not get enough power - we taxi back to the park position and make several runups - it seems to get better. We request another quick run to the starting point and the acceleration seems to be there. We dare the take-off - the Malibu takes off, but the acceleration seems to be lowered. Then we hear from the tower that there is a black trail of smoke behind us. We cancel immediately and turn back to the airport - we can take the runway 10 with tailwind, since it is long enough (3300m). Of course we take it and land immediately!

Taxi back to park position. Engine cowling - there is nothing to see on the engine. A few soldiers of the Chilean Air Force bring us an AVGAS sample - color bluish - ours is relatively uncoloured and clear. It seems to be kerosene. Meanwhile, Karl has received an email from Rafael in Chile, who has organized the AVGAS, with a bill reading "kerosene" - so the case is clear. We fueled two barrels of kerosene into the Malibu - we didn't smell any kerosene.

Now the challenge is to remove the kerosene from the Malibu and get real AVGAS. Short term this can only be done with the help of the Chilean Air Force. Edmunds, who knows everbody here, pulls his strings.
