Easter Island | Update 05

Update 18.09.

Update 18.09.

Our long involuntary stay on the Easter Island

Originally, we had planned a 3-day stay on the Easter Island. On 4 September we have arrived here - today is Sunday of 17, September, i.e. tomorrow we are here for 14 days.

The difficulty of getting the aviation gas from Valparaiso to this location is greater than we had expected. Three companies are involved: the aviation gas vendor, the licensing authority and the shipper. As early as May 31, the money was transferred - then it didn't arrive allegedly and friends of Karl in Santiago have advanced the money, so that the dispatch started, which then took place with considerable delays only. Yesterday, finally, the supply ship arrived, for all heavier goods and objects are transported by ship from Chile. But it has NOT been unloaded! - To our worried demand we got the answer: “National holidays” - oh my God - when will it continue? We tried to pull out all the stops as we wanted to use favorable winds for our flight to Robinson Crusoe Island - but to no avail! The answer was “not before 20 September”, so we can't fly before 21 September - if the weather allows it ...

Yes, such an island has its own laws and procedures. This also applies to the Internet here - speed can not be expected - in our accommodation it is constantly broken. However, we need to communicate quickly and reliably for our timetables and weather forecasts. I went to the telephone company Entel. In their office, however, nobody understood English and my few chunks of Spanish were not enough to explain that I needed an unlocked internet stick. Finally, a customer told me in English ”ÒItaliano has Internetsticks” - I asked my way to the shop of ÒItaliano. There he was, an immigrant Italian who complained about the telephone company ENTEL and said "no one changes anything here – for 20 years I am stuck with that. Madre mio!!!”

Finally I got my stick and could work with the internet, - I thought! It worked for a day. Whatever I was doing, nothing worked until I found out days later: you had to buy internet access hours in a drugstore shop! - So, go to a drugstore and I got my code: typing in - all the menus in Spanish - no chance - until a friendly staff member of our accommodation, who I asked for help, telephoned with ENTEL support (10 minutes) and the internet was running! - What a technical odyssey on the Easter Island!

In the meantime, Shaesta has completed her flight around the world:
